San Quentin State Prison. The oldest prison in California, dating back to 1852. The only prison in California to still have a gas chamber and a death row.

The Peabody Library, built in Baltimore in the 1870's, has been described as "a cathedral of books." The skylight is 61 feet above the main floor. It is now part of Johns Hopkins University.
