David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Scaphosepalum decorum in cultivation at home, one of my preferred specie in this aesthetic genus and moreover with a 5 cm big flowers. Again a colombian endemic (among more than 1500 species), from Cauca and Nariño departments in temperate-fresh climate.
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Lepanthes rutrum (flower size 5 mm), a very delightful species tnat strongly reminds me of a butterfly. It is endemic from Valle del Cauca department in Colombia and is not a cold grower but rather a temperate one, which is not so common in this genus.
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: The big and elegant Maxillaria augustae-victoriae (synonym Maxillaria hirtzii) alongside the exceptional Maxillaria longissima blooming at the same time to its left in situ in Ecuador, after 2 trips searching for it there.

David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Another Holy Grail for me as a passionate and intensive student of this genus for almost 30 years now. The big and elegant Maxillaria augustae-victoriae (synonym Maxillaria hirtzii) in situ in Ecuador, after 2 trips searching for it there.

David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Dracula lafleuri, one out of many "monkey face orchids", natural jewell from Ecuador blooming at home with its mushroom-shaped lip to attract Drosophilidae flies to ensure its pollination !
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Another incredibly conserved place I visited while trekking in the Gran savanna, is "El Abismo" (The Abyss). This is a low tepuy whose southern flank falls into the beginning of the Amazon (I also got down) very close to Brazil in Bolivar state, Venezuela
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Unpardonable! Yesterday was the orchid day in Colombia and I did not published anything. I do it today as it is better late than never... Here is Masdevallia odontocera, a miniature endemic from Nortes de Santander department in Colombia flowering at home

David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: I pictured this miniature orchid some years ago in situ at 3200 m asl. It is Porroglosum parsonii, endemic species from Colombia, probably described in USA from an imported and cultivated plant, for which no locality neither altitude is known.

David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Stenia pallida in situ, a nice specie with very pretty special flowers that I only saw once although it also exists in Colombia and from Venezuela to Bolivia and Brazil between 400 and1800 m asl. Here in Barinas state in Venezuela.
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Masdevallia sceptrum pictured in situ some years ago, a sublime multiflorous species with pretty big flowers having long caudas (long and thin tail-shaped sepals) distributed in Colombia and Venezuela between 2500 and 3900 m asl.
David Haelterman NatureguideColombia: Listen to the incredible metallic song of the the White Bellbird (Procnias albus) in Sierra de Lema, rainiest place of Venezuela, highly conserved and almost unexplored. One of the best place I ever went, during 10 days camping alone far from any village.
