AlainDurand: The Avro Lancaster is a British four-engined Second World War heavy bomber made initially by Avro for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It first saw active service in 1942,
AlainDurand: The French navy used 54 Avro Lancasters (32 B I and 22 B VII) between 1951 and 1964.
AlainDurand: The fourth Lancaster, WU 21 (NX664), survived mostly by luck.
AlainDurand: She was delivered in August 1952 to the Flotille 11F at Lartigues, but went to Lann- Bihoué in March 1953 to join the newly formed 25F until her first overhaul in 1954.
AlainDurand: On january 26th, 1963, she was sent in the Wallis island area to rescue a sick boy and do some mail drops,
AlainDurand: The french navy decided not to salvage her, since the remaining Lancasters were to be soon replaced by P2V Neptunes, and she was to seat there in the open, for nearly 22 years before being rescued and brought back to France by Ailes Anciennes-Le Bourget.
