INTPix: Welcome... to Fantasy Island! Oh, never mind, that reference is too old for you. We're in Hawaii in this album. So welcome to Hawaii. It's an island in the Pacific Ocean. You may have heard of it.
INTPix: Welcome to the vibrant streets of Hawi (in the Kohala region of the island), the town where we stayed during most of our journey. (Note: all vibrancy ceases at roughly 10pm nightly, so make sure you have drinks back at your lodgings.)
INTPix: Join us for coffee (or mineral water, if you don't partake of coffee) at one of Hawi's charming cafes.
INTPix: Enjoy some shopping. I bought an excellent Ukulele book at this shop. Btw, the items pictured here are meant to be worn, not displayed. The artist will deliver the garments to you desired location at no extra charge.
INTPix: Observe the local fauna. This is a zebra dove, if I'm recalling correctly. (I've decided to do zero fact checking or research for this album, it'll be a fun experiment for us all.)
INTPix: And check out these ancient artifacts, once used for communication. Hawaii is a land of history.
INTPix: Come along while we do our grocery shopping at Takata Market. (This place was awesome, in case the photo doesn't make that clear, and just a couple blocks from where we stayed.)
INTPix: At this point I should mention that the reason we're in Hawaii in the first place is to visit Thomas's parents Kevin and Sheryl who rented this lovely house in Hawi for the entire month of February. Thomas's brother Zach flew in the same week we did.
INTPix: Also I'm pretty sure there's a TARDIS in the rental house, even though every time I opened its doors I only found dishes and board games.
INTPix: So, as I alluded to earlier, I'm going to consult neither guidebook nor internet during the course of captioning this album. So let's just call this an "historic site." We went snorkeling just before this hike, btw, and saw some lovely fishes.
INTPix: An important part of the historical site, obviously.
INTPix: Who loves the sun.
INTPix: This is Hapuna beach. You pay $5 to get in, making it the most expensive beach we went to in Hawaii.
INTPix: Art Director: Zach Burke ("You should take a photo of those clouds.") Photographer: Alex Reshanov ("Okay.")
INTPix: And now a windswept beach in the northeast portion of the island. I would have guessed that "windswept" was two words, but spellcheck tells me it's a compound word.
INTPix: Some near-beach scenery. You can camp here if you like.
INTPix: Btw, when I say we're in Hawaii, I mean what is referred to as "The Big Island," which is to say the island known as Hawaii, which is part of the archipelago known as the Hawaiian Islands.
INTPix: And if you think I cheated and Googled the word, "archipelago," you are incorrect. I asked Thomas to confirm the word and let spellcheck help with the rest.
INTPix: And now we're driving throught the Waimea Valley, where the temperature drops, the fog rolls in, and the winding roads cause motion sickness in those prone to such things.
INTPix: A stroll through some under-visited inland park.
INTPix: This trail was probably under 2 miles roundtrip, but the constant threat of rain made it feel slightly more adventurous.
INTPix: Island flora.
INTPix: Sunset near Hawi, where one can see whales (!), which would have been even more exciting if one had remembered to bring one's binoculars rather than leaving them in the rental house.
INTPix: And now a full day at the beach.
INTPix: The only problem is that the waves have picked up considerably.
INTPix: So we head to this sheltered beach somewhere between Kahala and Kona.
INTPix: See how tranquil it is?
INTPix: Note waves doing scary things in the distance, but not here at Beach Whatever The Name of This Place Was.
INTPix: Thomas and Zach wasting their lives on the shore (they wore themselves out at the previous wavy beach) while I swim and encounter a needlefish, easily seen without snorkeling equipment.
INTPix: I also saw some impressive underwater lava rock. I'd try to figure out what it is online, but you know the rules here.
