INTPix:
Salem by daylight. This is the "Witch House" where local magistrate Jonathan Corwin purportedly examined accused witches.
INTPix:
As you might expect, Salem's tourist shops are well stocked with tarot cards, and its spray-paint-toting teenagers are still into The Cure.
INTPix:
The basement of the coffee shop from the previous photo, where the ghost band is just setting up.
INTPix:
Graves behind the Witch House. There's also a memorial here (not pictured) to remind you that 20 innocent people were killed in the witch hunting hysteria that makes Salem a household name.
INTPix:
Older gravestones are awesome in that they tend to focus on grim death rather than the cheery afterlife. Lots of scary skull imagery here.
INTPix:
Portsmouth, NH. En route to Portland, ME. Every other town in coastal New England has the word "port" in its name.
INTPix:
More pretty houses of no known historic importance. This is still Portsmouth. We stopped in Gloucester too but made the bad decision of walking into a record store, so no pictures of Gloucester.
INTPix:
Portland, ME. This completes our tour of U.S. cities named Portland (we saw the OR version a couple summers back).
INTPix:
Parking in downtown Portland is not easy. But at least you see lots of pretty houses while you're driving around in circles looking for an open spot.
INTPix:
Portland's wharf. You can place love locks here, but if someone cuts yours, you're legally obligated to break up.
INTPix:
The fog arrived at around the same time we did. You can see it rolling in from the east here.
INTPix:
As someone who writes about science, I can't officially endorse monster studies. But as a fan of The X-Files, I also can't know that this museum exists and not go to it.
INTPix:
A quiet Monday night of beer and books before we begin the camping part of our trip tomorrow.
