Another old stomping ground and a bonus as I found a ledge to work on. Lots of vans, trucks and taxis weaving passed along this road in front of #Liberty. I prefer walking around London early and one of my favourite photos is of Trafalgar Square from a fe

I wanted to cover a large format so I removed a sheet and worked over two sheets. So many people asking if I could speak English so it was nice to sketch for across the rive.

The barge owner had a BBQ, bike racks, toys, a bamboo screen on the dock side. I wanted to work on a sheet much larger than the one I had. I actually pulled out a page and worked across two sheets for my next sketch ... and then it blew about 10 m and int

Final Watercolour Workshop 4 on Scenes (and bringing it all together) @scrumptiousreads. I missed taking a few photos again! We looked at all the bits and bobs in a scene like people, cars and trees in a scene to complement a building. Rather than the det

A more considered painting playing up the reflections in the canal and the leading in lines of the lock. A bit overworked with a dribble line and I would grey the sky more next time. #manchesterart

A sketch from a photo I had taken overseas ... showing a thumbnail as I was trying to figure out the darks as there weren't strong shadows as it was an overcast day.

#beefeatertomatoes, done four-ways. From left to right, top to bottom; 4, 10, 20 and 35 minutes. I also changed the paper to a thicker 300gsm paper as the blending on the 20 mins sketch was starting to show some wear. I like the looseness of the quick one

A few weeks ago I sketched the full-lipped looking duck resting in Queens Park as some workers touch up the gold on the eagle statue. The duck is part of Australia's biggest duck race and is being held in West End, Brisbane this Saturday 15 October from n

I am falling a bit behind with #inktober day 9(/31) but I am still enjoying it. Monstera deliciosa ... delicious monsters ... fruits salad plant ... Swiss cheese plant. So I had to google why the plant has evolved to have holes as it seemed counter-intuit

Two books I am using as backup references at the workshop tonight: Claudia Nice's Watercolour Techniques with Pen & Ink (1995) and Richard Taylor's The Watercolourist's guide to Painting Buildings (1998). Nice's book is jammed pack with how to create text

I was looking for some examples of textures using watercolour, ink, coloured pencil and watercolour pencil and I found this piece that i painted near #Penola in December 2015. It's two full sheets painted on the ground, the dirt blew on the wet paint and

Day 6(/31) of #inktober: Morpheus. I love the top black poppy so I might try to do an interlocking pattern ... another poppy that is melting into the background and a few poppy pods ... #blackpoppy

Colour charting the reds. I only used to have cad orange and cad red but I now have pyrrol orange, organic vermillion, permanent rose and permanent alizarin Crimson. I don't think I need the PAC as it's similar enough to permanent rose. Handprint.com sugg

This is more detailed than what I tend to do but i sat for about 30-40 mins in front of the display to capture this beautiful live snake at the @qldmuseum . There is a nice little ledge that acts like an easel. Next time I'll try the snake in jars!

I loved the different poses of the skeletal Frogmouths at the @qldmuseum . I think it's now my second favourite display after the over-dramatic mini rodent.

For the colour swatches I put out little dots of colours on a large palette to speed up the process. Sometimes, I don't use up all the paint so I did a few sky and cloud studies with the left over blue with no pencil outline. As the last one is drying, I

Day 4(/31) of #inktober: on a pedestal. I wrote cat in Japanese kanji to the right but as I was tearing the paper out of the notepad, the ink hadn't dried and created drip marks ... I wouldn't usually mind drips and surprises but it looked more like a cri

Testing out some blues last night against my current colours. I have a methodical way of testing so it's quick. I prefer seeing the variety in colour and tone by doing various strips of the two colour combinations but this gives me a good first pass of co
