Thos. Cook & Son Ltd. had the paddlewheel steamships SUDAN, ARABIA and EGYPT built in Scotland. SUDAN commenced service on the Nile in 1922, the same year Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered, drawing visitors to Egypt from all over the world.

This is the last steamship operating on the Nile. It was while traveling onboard SUDAN with her archaeologist husband that Agatha Christie was inspired to write 'Death on the Nile'.

After spending the night docked at Qena, our group traveled overland for two hours to Abydos, to see the Temple of Seti l (1,304 - 1,290 B.C.).

The decoration in the Temple of Seti l - particularly the reliefs - is considered to be among the finest achievements of Egyptian sculpture.

On our way back to Qena, we stopped in Dendera to see the remarkably well-preserved Temple of Hathor. It was built during the reigns of the last Ptolemies, and following the death of Cleopatra Vll in 30 B.C. was completed by the Emperor Augustus.
