Aurora Borealis over the Pinyons in the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico. While taking this we had a bull elk call nearby. It was a very thrilling time to experience. Such a rare event to behold. The KP Index rating was 8 for the Northern Lights show.

This is an important time of the year for birds to cache or store their food since Pinyon trees only produce every 2-3 years. This Pinyon jay can gather up to 50 nuts in its throat pouch at anytime. They are essential for a healthy pinyon habitat.

Part of a sequence, the Pinyon nuts have arrived after three years of waiting. This jay is off and running with his pouch of seeds. They can hold 50 seeds. The Pinyon jays take in about 1000 seeds per season and a portion become new trees.
