After the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, USAID and the government of Indonesia were sensitive to the plight of the region and the immediate need for a national highway that connected Aceh to Calang.

USAID rehabilitated over 140 miles of the West Coast Highway from Banda Aceh to Calang heavily damaged in the 2004 disaster.

During the construction of the national highway, there were many challenges including times of unexpectedly large concentrations of rainfall causing rapid flooding that washed away developing work.

USAID reconstructed and rehabilitated the West Coast Highway that runs from Banda Aceh to Calang. The highway runs over the Masen River due to the development of a steel bridge structure.
