Sheriff of Nothing: Lilly & I check each other out
Sheriff of Nothing: I also became aquainted with Lilly, a Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)
Sheriff of Nothing: At first we get Lilly to make short journeys to feed from my fist.
Sheriff of Nothing: Lilly eats from my fist. She's simply stunning, weighs about 2lbs.
Sheriff of Nothing: Our host for the day, the delightful Sadie, whose birds these are, with Lilly.
Sheriff of Nothing: The vast majority of time spent working with these wonderful creatures involves simply spending time with the bird on your fist. This is known as 'manning' the bird.
Sheriff of Nothing: Lilly has chased down a lure and is now 'mantling' her 'kill'.
Sheriff of Nothing: Here's Lilly close up. Beautiful Harrier-Hawk.
Sheriff of Nothing: Look at that steely-eyed, single-minded focus! Lilly also appears to be alert.
Sheriff of Nothing: It is such a privilege and a joy to be in such close proximity to these birds and to learn something of their character. Each one feels different, flies differently, behaves differently....
Sheriff of Nothing: Where there are hunting falcons there are often ferrets to flush the rabbits from the earth. This little fellow is luxuriously snoozing.
Sheriff of Nothing: This lovely little chap is a Tawny Owl. Contrary to popular belief, owls just aren't that smart. Most of there brain is given over to night-vision functions. They are, however, extremely charming and very beautiful.
Sheriff of Nothing: My little friend makes a dead chick disappear. One cute creature devours another...
Sheriff of Nothing: A Kestrel for a Knave...
Sheriff of Nothing: Such a beautiful boy! Only six months old and still a lot of learning work to do...
Sheriff of Nothing: He flies to my fist and takes food.
Sheriff of Nothing: Today I got to play with Billie-Jean, a gorgeous European Eagle Owl (Bubo Bubo)
Sheriff of Nothing: This is Billie-Jean, she's big & beautiful! As much as I love the hawks, I adore the owls. I WANT ONE!
Sheriff of Nothing: Billie-Jean takes food from Alessia's fist...
Sheriff of Nothing: Billie-Jean, a European Eagle Owl flies to me
Sheriff of Nothing: The colour of her eyes is stunning and she has amazing furry feet.
Sheriff of Nothing: Billie-Jean. A European Eagle Owl. The biggest of the owls. What a gorgeous creature.
Sheriff of Nothing: My last flight of the day was the Bugatti of birds, the Peregrine Falcon who can stoop at 180kmh
Sheriff of Nothing: My last flight of the day was the Bugatti of birds, the Peregrine Falcon who can stoop at 180kmh
Sheriff of Nothing: I caught this morning morning's minion, king-dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
Sheriff of Nothing: My heart in hiding stirred for a bird, the achieve of, the mastery of the thing.
