Lanterns spontaneously catching fire was a common sight tonight. Sometimes the flames would jump onto other lanterns it comes in contact with on its journey downstream, resulting in lantern carnage.

Linda with her lantern. We actually punctured a hole in the bottom of the styrofoam base with the incense sticks! We're weren't able to track its progress downstream in the darkness, but I don't think it sank...
