Day break on Bob & Beckie's farm at Sinks Grove near Union in Monroe County
My Good Eye:
A rising sun warms the landscape while Beckie & Bob tend to the horses.
My Good Eye:
Bob makes us a healthy breakfast of oatmeal, walnuts and fresh fruit.
My Good Eye:
Breakfast served and consumed after the horses were cared for Bob rounds up the stuff we need for today's ride - including peanutbutter sandwiches on bread he makes every few days.
My Good Eye:
morning gloriously pours over the farm and Beckie's horses standing in the field above the barn - fog coming up from the low pond has yet to burn off.
My Good Eye:
A two hour drive from Union brings us to the Company Store at Cass, in Pocahontas County
My Good Eye:
the lunch counter inside the Cass Company Store
My Good Eye:
Bob & Beckie in the Cass Museum portion of the Company Store
My Good Eye:
several rude passenger cars pushed by an old Shay locomotive intended for logging wait the next portion of the days journey at the Cass Scenic Railroad station at Cass
My Good Eye:
Shay locomotives were mighty little work horses and the fact this one is still in regular service after more than a century is a testament to durability
My Good Eye:
"Captain Hard-Ass" - Bob, ever the serious cyclist, suits up for our ride in the parking lot at Cass. He's already ridden a round trip Caldwel - Cass and back this summer, 158 miles in one day on gravel - so today's one-way will be a piece of cake.
My Good Eye:
Two stalwarts stand next to an even more ancient and more stalwart Shay locomotive
My Good Eye:
two fit but aging cyclists stand railside as the Shay lets off steam and belches smoke from its boiler.

My Good Eye:
Bob on the lovely curving bridge across the Greenbrier just below Sharpe's Tunnel
My Good Eye:
Bob and yours truly just below the Sharp's Tunnel - that's not a cave behind us but an old railroad tunnel.
My Good Eye:
Bob crosses the Greenbrier on a bridge just downstream from Sharp's Tunnel, the first of two tunnels we encountered.
My Good Eye:

My Good Eye:
Yours truly with Olive (who was experiencing leaky tires front and back all day) along the route Sunday during our 79-mile traverse of the Greebrier River Trail
My Good Eye:
riding through Marlinton of the Greenbrier River Trail
My Good Eye:
Bob meets an interesting woman in Marlinton
My Good Eye:
a bridge across the Greenbrier River just on the outskirts of Marlinton in Pocahontas County
My Good Eye:
once a railroad trestle now a bicycle bridge along the Greenbrier River Trail
My Good Eye:
Beckie transported us to Cass and then doubled back to Jack Horner's store at the entrance to Watoga State Park from which she cycled north to meet us to ride back with us for lunch there.
My Good Eye:
Entering the Droop Mountain Tunnel from the Cass side - riding through a long un-lit tunnel without bicycle lights is unnerving and disorienting.
My Good Eye:
Bob rides into the gloom of the Droop Mountain Tunnel with no lights on his bike (we both ill-advisably left ours home)
My Good Eye:
we briefly stash our bikes so Bob can show me an old quarry near the trail.
My Good Eye:
Bob is justifiably proud of having led the crew that constructed this magnificent one-hole shitter along the Greenbrier River Trail not too far above Caldwell
My Good Eye:
in this screenshot of the Greenbrier River Trail from Google Maps curiously the only significant town along its course, Marlinton, does not appear.
