On our way to Mount Teide, our guide Pedro told us the 'Mexican hat' meant it was probably too windy for the cable car to run, ruling out our hike to the summit. :-(

Pedro explained the landscape is so varied ('the little continent') as Tenerife was three islands before the Teide volcano came up out of the sea and joined them together.

When we came to Puerto de la Cruz last year we only saw Mount Teide from the bus on the way back to the airport. I wondered... if I walk to the other end of the balcony, and look back, is it THERE...?

The cliffs are up to 800 metres high. That's over three times as high as Canary Wharf Tower - can that be right?!
