Eastern Oregon is actually a desert and reminds me of the mountains in west Texas. It's regularly 100+ degrees and easily up to 110 in the canyons. There are no trees, only small shrubs, dirt, and sometimes dead grass.

An orange sky like this in the afternoon is caused by smoke from forest fires. Just an hour or two ago, it was a clear blue sky. I think this might be the fire http://gacc.nifc.gov/nwcc/information/fire_info.aspx#OR-972S-000843
