By the Dourbie river, this was preoccupied with eating. Is it a male Skimmer of sorts, that hasn’t yet developed its full colours?

Carpenter Bees, I assume the male has no colour or else it's a different species on the attack. As I left, one dropped to the ground but I couldn't find it in the vegetation. Any ideas?
