Rashki: Felicity Ann arrived in Haines today !!
Rashki: Ann Davison, sailed Felicity Ann across the Atlantic Ocean in 1953 to become the 1st woman to sail the Atlantic alone.
Rashki: Felicity Ann was the darling of the ship yard…her builders dubbed her “Sweet FA.”
Rashki: Built in Plymouth, England - 1939
Rashki: Our shipwright builds his Post & Beam house, complements of Felicity Ann’s repair work.
Rashki: John White's Boat shop on Mud Bay
Rashki: Bow on view of Felicity Ann in John' s Shop
Rashki: The old "rotten" keel has been removed.
Rashki: Ian Seward carving part of the new keel out of Purpleheart, a tropical hardwood.
Rashki: The bow beneath the old fiberglass - which will be removed.
Rashki: The decayed part of the stern.
Rashki: John white and the old ballast from the keel.
Rashki: Felicity Ann in the Shipwright’s Shop
Rashki: Very bad news!! The keel is rotten!
Rashki: Apparently the decay began long ago…Unfortunately, now the entire keel must be replaced…big job…..big $$.
Rashki: At some time, she was fiberglassed below the waterline. That aggravated the problem which led to the rotting wood in the keel. Well, beginning today, the fiberglass is coming off to reveal the original woodwork. We won’t put any fiberglass back.
Rashki: We can see the 1930's woodwork below the fiberglass.
Rashki: Bow shot
Rashki: Fiberglass coming off.
Rashki: Looking from bow to stern.
Rashki: Nice shop... for the repairs
Rashki: Felicity Ann unwrapped.
Rashki: The Rot is the bad news…the good news is that Haines has facilities and Shipwrights experienced in building wooden sailboats. They are combining their efforts to make Felicity Ann well again.
