mtakanen: Ice in 3D at Vuori-Kalaja pond.
mtakanen: Xavier demonstrates the classic trick: skating on water! It's amazing that with enough speed 1,5 mm wide blades can float one on the water.
mtakanen: Wait, you don't actually need any speed to float here.
mtakanen: Expedition on Kodanovinen open.
mtakanen: We started a bit too late to try it really. Also ice conditions wouldn't allow us to skate across middle of the lake.
mtakanen: Instead, we went camping on Kodanovinen island. Xavier brought his kit in the small backpack; Marko's gear required an extra barrel pack.
mtakanen: Marko making a hole in the ice to fetch water. Water is very clear, we'd drink it without filtering.
mtakanen: Our first camp on the shore. Just for the view that would fade away in an hour.
mtakanen: Wind picked up and forced us to move the camp in the woods.
mtakanen: Pitchy stump fire, one of the greatest wonders of forest.
mtakanen: Marko making coffee on fire.
mtakanen: Xavier making tea in the vestibule of his shelter.
mtakanen: Checking ice conditions. Luckily not all the ice had gone in the night.
mtakanen: In addition to rafted ice on shores, open water area in the channel between the islands had grown bigger.
mtakanen: Good enough, let's go!
mtakanen: Modern trick: skating on waves.
mtakanen: Pulka worked quite well on the ice. (And not that well in the bush.)
mtakanen: Imaginary borders are meant to be crossed.
mtakanen: The sun makes her best for about a quarter.
mtakanen: Beaty of ice
mtakanen: There are not many birds living through the winter here, raven is one of the survivors.
mtakanen: Open lead across the way.
mtakanen: There are always alternative ways.
mtakanen: Camouflage pike. It seems local fishermen evaluate pike good enough for birds only. We should have taken it and make Christmas pike.
mtakanen: Tiny island
mtakanen: Break somewhere on Kalajanjärvi lake.
mtakanen: Kirkkolahti
mtakanen: Safely back to the starting point.
mtakanen: East face of Kalajanvuori on Vuori-Kalaja pond. The "mountain" goes 70 meters above the surface and 30 meters below.
