mtakanen:
I don't live next to a Great Wilderness but still wanted to go on a packrafting tour from the door of my home. The previous winter I had started a skiing tour from our backyard and it felt great.
mtakanen:
After sunset I reached Southern Nuuksio. It started raining a bit. I'd light my headlamp for night orienteering.
mtakanen:
After some hairy orienteering I found Hynkänlampi cooking shelter and decided to camp there as it was still raining.
mtakanen:
A grouse flew over the swamp and the first snow of the winter would stay on the moss bed for a while.
mtakanen:
Going West of Nuuksio I passed Iso-Holma lake. Clouds started to clear. I had a working lunch ala Bullet Meal.
mtakanen:
Later I reached a branch of Siuntiojoki river. This would have been the first but very uninspiring place to go to water.
mtakanen:
Navigating to South West corner of Tervalampi where the river would continue. The place was not obvious as the reed bed had taken over the shores.
mtakanen:
At sunset I paddled in Palojärvi lake and thought Palosaari island would be my next campsite.
mtakanen:
Found a cosy old campsite south side of the island. Someone's wet gear was hanging everywhere.
mtakanen:
Temperature started dropping and wind was picking up. It was wise to bring some dry firewood from Saarilampi cooking place (in Nuuksio).
mtakanen:
In the morning I had seen a mouse at my pack and now learned what it was after. The friendly mouse had left me one of the sausages.
mtakanen:
Dry feet strategy failed big time. I had duct-taped the rain pant legs over the hiking boots but the tape failed to stick on wet leather.
mtakanen:
I had underestimated stove fuel consumption in rather difficult conditions and had to make a fire in the morning to make breakfast. The campsite provides the axe and the grill.
mtakanen:
It was nearly midday before the boat was ready. The first leg would be in mild headwind across the lake.
