The girls are receiving oxygen and treatment for a heart vessel defect that is common in premature babies, according to Dr. Jayne Finkowski-Rivera, the neonatologist at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.

Finkowski-Rivera said the two-pound babies need to gain more weight before being discharged.

But the decision about when they leave the hospital has more to do with developmental function than their size or gestational age.

"The baby girls did well during the delivery and are currently requiring only modest support of their breathing," Dr. Finkowski-Rivera said.
