JETNZ: When the ruts of the Paddle Hill Creek 4WD track got too deep, we parked up as the other vehicle was starting to bottom out.
JETNZ: This was why we stopped… not for vehicles with low ground clearance
JETNZ: But then it got better…Mt Guy (1319m) on the left
JETNZ: Mart never misses an opprotunty to ride through water. Paddle Hill Creek
JETNZ: At the Te Araroa junction to Mystery Lake
JETNZ: Looking north
JETNZ: New to bike-packing, this was a good opportunity to test handling
JETNZ: Lovely lovely trail…The low terrace in the centre was the only climb facing us today. All 10 minutes of it!
JETNZ: The bulk and weight of a loaded bike makes small hills just a little harder... [© Martin Shaw]
JETNZ: Hot work
JETNZ: Looking back accross Paddle Hill Creek flats and the distant Trinity Hill (1016m)
JETNZ: Above the terrace the track lead us to the left of a swampy marsh
JETNZ: Magnificent MTB country!
JETNZ: The light on these grasses was magic. Great at choking drive trains as it turned out
JETNZ: Riding a heavy 20yr old steel bike with panniers containing essentials like red wine, bogs were a headache for Lois
JETNZ: Just about to drop down to the South Branch Ashburton River
JETNZ: South Branch Ashburton River
JETNZ: So tempting to carry on. Next time...
JETNZ: Boundary Creek winds its way west
JETNZ: A welcome sight. Boundary Creek Hut
JETNZ: Back at bog stop, we saw a black dot and dust behind and thinking it was a 4WD, I hurried on to secure 3 bunks
JETNZ: It was half an hour before the others turned up so I wandered around enjoying the last sunlight
JETNZ: Boundary Creek Hut, a former musterers hut but now with a little DOC treatment
JETNZ: The "grot". Not the worst I've seen but could do with a new seat… (cracked and covered in bird droppings)
JETNZ: Nice bit of natural edging
JETNZ: Mart and Lois finally arrive. No sign of the phantom 4WD…
JETNZ: Inside the hut. Firewood was scarce… and required some foraging. Mart won the prize for collecting the most wood
JETNZ: DAY 2: Frosty start. While the others were reluctant to leave their warm sleeping bags, I was treated to this!
JETNZ: Cuppa time for the sun lizards
JETNZ: Morning light on the silver birches. Dog kennel drums were scattered about the site
