Leaving Funchal, capitol city of Madeira, we find very good roads with lots of tunnels and switchbacks. The red flowers seen everywhere in the south are Aloe.

I thought I'd seen banana plantations before, and I thought I'd seen terraced farming before, but it was nothing compared to Madeira!

Particularly on the south side of the island, every inch that can be terraced seems to be devoted to banana trees. Please pardon the reflections from the bus windows.
