While staying overnight with a local family on a remote Mioko Island, PNG, we felt so welcomed with everyone on the island saying Hello and smiling at us. We participated in daily chores and played with kids in this place; I can only describe as paradise.

Friendly locals emerged from their houses to have a chat with us on the remote Mioko Island, Papua New Guinea, July 2019. Kids were shy at first but this did not last long.

Food in PNG surprised me. Many Pacific countries we visited are flooded with Western fast food. In PNG we were always treated with amazing local food.

The main foods eaten in PNG today are pork, chicken, marsupials, birds, fish, shellfish, sago, sweet potato, taro, cassava, breadfruit, leafy greens (kumu), coconut and other fruits. See below.

Baining were original inhabitants of the region but moved to the mountains when attacked by Tolai. They lived in isolation for generations and their rituals were kept hidden. Around 1960s they started selling crops to other tribes and became more visible.
