Laura Gilchrist: 107/365 High Five #edugood One of my Ss in action, making a call about Food Recycling. His action team wants to implement food recycling at our school. They believe we are sending unnecessary waste to our landfills. THIS WAS THE CALL THAT STARTED IT ALL!!
Laura Gilchrist: Christina Eglich, from Missouri Organic, and me ...on the day she came to school twice to visit face-to-face with my 3 groups/classes of Landfill CBL kids!! That's dedication! She is good with kids and cares kids and the environment!
Laura Gilchrist: OUR FOOD WASTE at New Mark turns into this compost!! SOIL TO PLATE TO SOIL!! (You can't plant in straight compost--must mix it with soil!) This stuff is all natural and is like gold for your plants and animals underground! No food in the landfill from us

Laura Gilchrist: Missouri Organic Flyer!
Laura Gilchrist: This is PBL!! They did it! These 2 gentlemen made 2nd call to Missouri Organic (along with 2 others) and New Mark MS is now piloting our goal of moving from 100% landfill in the lunchroom (kids noticed, were not pleased) to zero landfill (10%or less to la
Laura Gilchrist: One bag of food waste diverted from the dumpster and the landfill; collected during 6th grade lunch. The bin was almost full by the end. Milk cartons, food scraps, and napkins. Thank you, MIssouri Organic!
Laura Gilchrist: Our First week setup. We thought this space was ideal for the new recycling 2-step! It was opposite of normal (opposite direction) and we had food first. **(We changed the location and the order the Second Week). We learned a lesson about duct tape--it d
Laura Gilchrist: We had the kids come the opposite direction than normal to dump trays. We made that decision based on an open space for the bins. Didn't work. We changed it the next week!
Laura Gilchrist: Here Ethan helps Ms. Hamby determine what goes where. :)
Laura Gilchrist: In our FIRST WEEK setup we had everyone dump food first and then recyclables. We switched that as well the next week! Took longer that way.
Laura Gilchrist: Ms. Hamby is going to DO THIS!! :) New routine. New day!
Laura Gilchrist: Almost done going all recycled/composted!! NO LANDFILL today!!
Laura Gilchrist: She did it!! Thanks Ms. Hamby for the pictures and the smile. :) No waste to the landfill!! All will be recycled!
Laura Gilchrist: OUR SECOND WEEK SETUP!! 1. Plastics/aluminum/chip bags go in first bin for Abitibi Commingled 2. Then biodegradable food and paper stuffs, including milk cartons with or without milk in them, napkins, paper lunch bags go in Missouri Organic eco liner.
Laura Gilchrist: Second week setup. This came first. If you had any cans with liquid in them, you dumped them in the white container and then put the cans in the gray bin.
Laura Gilchrist: Again, our SECOND WEEK SETUP. We moved the bins over to the other side of the tray dropoff, back to normal traffic flow. We put the recyclables first (black liner for commingled) and then the FOOD/COMPOST! Worked much better!
Laura Gilchrist: Dragged this into class after 6th grade lunch. Commingled. Not the only one. The body language says it all. We used to send all of this to the landfill. "Why hasn't anyone done anything about this before?" Great question, kids.
Laura Gilchrist: Hand drawn Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Laura Gilchrist: Kudos to Kauffman Foundation for promoting responsible handling of 'waste,' diverting it FROM landfills to where it can be recycled and turned into rich compost.--> i would love to see these at NMMS, all over the school. What do you think, kids?
Laura Gilchrist: Talking to Mrs. Hulfeld about recycling!!
Laura Gilchrist: Paper.
Laura Gilchrist: We used to send all this to the Landfill. Look at all the plastics and aluminum cans in the dumpster.
