La Spezia north of Rome - the gateway to the Cinque Terre.

Manarola, the first village we saw on the Cinque Terre. The bus parked much higher than this, and it was a long steep walk to the sea. Above all the towns are terraced hillsides, perhaps 1000 years old, where the villages grow grapes and other crops.

Manarola - There is no protected harbour, and no vehicles are allowed in the town, so boats are parked on the streets.

Manarola - we continue to walk towards the ocean.

Manarola - Above the ocean there is a small plaza, with restaurants. The buildings are a lovely variety of pastel colours.

Manarola - A group of local fishermen were taking fish from the nets.

Corniglia - We got on a tourist boat and went north up the coast. We didn't stop in this village.

Vernazza - Up the coast again, to Vernazza in this boat.

Vernazza has an interesting public square on the bay, with restaurants that have brightly coloured unbrellas.

Monterosso is in two parts. We walked to the second part to catch the train back to La Spezia. The train was late, as police were catching a pick-pocket who had locked himself in a bathroom.

Monte Carlo - Only one ship can dock in Monte Carlo. Here we are at their new-ish pier. The Hop-on Hop-off bus comes right to the bow.

The cathedral (above) and the palace are up on a promontory above the harbour.... simply called 'The Rock'.

This part of Monaco is called Fontvieille. It was reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s.

From the palace to the Oceanographic museum (the top you can see in the distance) there is a lovely path.

At the end of this path there is an escalator and a series of elevators to take you to sea level.

Down the elevators we are on a path that takes us to the ship.
