Georgia Strait: La Spezia north of Rome - the gateway to the Cinque Terre.
Georgia Strait: Manarola, the first village we saw on the Cinque Terre. The bus parked much higher than this, and it was a long steep walk to the sea. Above all the towns are terraced hillsides, perhaps 1000 years old, where the villages grow grapes and other crops.
Georgia Strait: Manarola - There is no protected harbour, and no vehicles are allowed in the town, so boats are parked on the streets.
Georgia Strait: Manarola - we continue to walk towards the ocean.
Georgia Strait: Manarola - Above the ocean there is a small plaza, with restaurants. The buildings are a lovely variety of pastel colours.
Georgia Strait: Manarola - A group of local fishermen were taking fish from the nets.
Georgia Strait: Corniglia - We got on a tourist boat and went north up the coast. We didn't stop in this village.
Georgia Strait: Vernazza - Up the coast again, to Vernazza in this boat.
Georgia Strait: Vernazza has an interesting public square on the bay, with restaurants that have brightly coloured unbrellas.
Georgia Strait: An old water pump on the square.
Georgia Strait: Vernazza - the main street
Georgia Strait: Monterosso - back on the boat to the last stop.
Georgia Strait: Walking in Monterosso. As you can see, rain is beginning.
Georgia Strait: Monterosso - rain and reflections.
Georgia Strait: Monterosso is in two parts. We walked to the second part to catch the train back to La Spezia. The train was late, as police were catching a pick-pocket who had locked himself in a bathroom.
Georgia Strait: Monte Carlo - Only one ship can dock in Monte Carlo. Here we are at their new-ish pier. The Hop-on Hop-off bus comes right to the bow.
Georgia Strait: The cathedral (above) and the palace are up on a promontory above the harbour.... simply called 'The Rock'.
Georgia Strait: The palace, the home of Albert II, the reigning prince of Monaco.
Georgia Strait: View of the harbour...
Georgia Strait: The western side of Monaco, from the gardens on the Rock.
Georgia Strait: This part of Monaco is called Fontvieille. It was reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s.
Georgia Strait: From the palace to the Oceanographic museum (the top you can see in the distance) there is a lovely path.
Georgia Strait: At the end of this path there is an escalator and a series of elevators to take you to sea level.
Georgia Strait: Down the elevators we are on a path that takes us to the ship.
Georgia Strait: Beautiful colours in the Mediterranean waters.....
