Desiree Koh: Colorful Deepavali banners strung across every pair of streetlights across the four-lane Serangoon Road, quite a sight to behold!
Desiree Koh: Fresh flower garlands make for a nice welcome!
Desiree Koh: A grocery store packed with snacks for the Indian new year.
Desiree Koh: Shoppers on Buffalo Road.
Desiree Koh: I'm not sure if bananas are supposed to be a big part of the celebrations or if it's because they just are.
Desiree Koh: Making fresh garlands from jasmine flowers.
Desiree Koh: Campbell Lane has been closed to traffic for about a month now, and is packed with stalls selling Deepavali paraphernalia.
Desiree Koh: See, more bananas.
Desiree Koh: We wandered down Dunlop Street to find more produce stores and stores selling things like prepaid phone cards and sundry items.
Desiree Koh: Saris don't fit anymore?
Desiree Koh: Take notice!
Desiree Koh: Giant plaintains. Bananas.
Desiree Koh: Are we going bananas yet?
Desiree Koh: Mr. Dosai! Outside Komala's, Little India's first fast food joint for vegetarian Indian fare.
Desiree Koh: The Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, a homage to the goddess Kali.
Desiree Koh: If I was tall enough, perhaps I could actually appreciate the detail of the sculptures.
Desiree Koh: The best buck-thirty I spent all day was on this baby coconut which I slurped up in one gulp.
Desiree Koh: Jackfruit, or nangka. One of my all-time favorite tropical fruits. They're gigantic, too.
Desiree Koh: The rind is rather soft, despite a spikeless-durian appearance.
Desiree Koh: RED plaintains.
Desiree Koh: I had lunch at Kandahir's, where rows of steaming curries awaited.
Desiree Koh: From my window seat, a view of the temple still.
Desiree Koh: Mutton briyani set meal, with a papadum and a cucumber salad in yogurt dressing.
Desiree Koh: I realized I didn't have any silverware and waited to ask a frenzied waiter for some.
Desiree Koh: Then I realized, I was in Little India, stupid! I should eat with my hands!
Desiree Koh: Ahh, dessert. I forget what these are called, but at the Tiffin buffet on Devon in Chicago, I could eat about six of these suckers after a more-than-full meal.
Desiree Koh: The dessert table, with Indian donuts (and more inviting fried ball stuff next to it).
Desiree Koh: More treats.
