Dale Simonson:
sailing in the driveway
Dale Simonson:
drop the sail, for the night
Dale Simonson:
boom at rest in lazy jacks, standard height
Dale Simonson:
shortened lazyjacks, for more height under boom
Dale Simonson:
test set of poles to support tent
Dale Simonson:
poles hang from mainsheet "bails" on boom
Dale Simonson:
test with scrap fabric
Dale Simonson:
initial sketch (based on 61" tent poles)
Dale Simonson:
inventoried poles at hand, selected 78" length for more shoulder room inside tent, and developed key dimensions
Dale Simonson:
started cutting up an old fly that we found in a curb-side garbage pile
Dale Simonson:
cut out the "dome" curve of the top edge, and flat-felled a new straight seam that will follow the underside of boom.
Dale Simonson:
sewed a loop at forward edge, it will attach to the mast with a bungie
Dale Simonson:
sewed in 4 webbing "pockets" that will reinforce and hold the ends of the poles
Dale Simonson:
the pockets also capture a loop of para-cord, to attach guy-lines to tension and hold down the poles when we want to have the sides of the tent rolled up, bimini-style
Dale Simonson:
test fit, and plot side seam "darts"
Dale Simonson:
cut out and sew big "darts" for each corner (you can see the "pocket" for the pole end at head of dart, showing through from underside)
Dale Simonson:
corner dart
Dale Simonson:
darts cut, fly folded along ridge-line on right, forward end in foreground
Dale Simonson:
test fit, and plot bottom edges of fly
Dale Simonson:
planning attachments at stern
Dale Simonson:
sides folded up, bimini-style
Dale Simonson:
rear view, sides folded up
Dale Simonson:
side view: seems to be working out!
Dale Simonson:
bottom edges roughly cut
Dale Simonson:
further refinement of final shape
Dale Simonson:
measure three times, cut twice, then do it again!
Dale Simonson:
final edge profile
Dale Simonson:
bind all edges, then apply seam sealer
Dale Simonson:
sewing complete (for this prototype!)
