The previous owner left this mystery item along with the other fireplace accessories. Our best guess is that you heat it up and then hold it near the chimney to get the fireplace to draw?

This is the den that we couldn't take photos of before b/c the owner was sitting in here during the showing. Also, we took a whole carload of books, lps, etc. from our apt and it just filled up this cabinet.
