An eastbound container train has climbed over Cajon Pass, out of the LA Basin and now glides along the ridgetops along Little Antelope Valley with the San Gabriel Mountains looming high as the backdrop near Victorville, CA on November 2, 2019.

Five BNSF engines lead this intermodal at Cajon Summit 3,375 feet in elevation. The crew can now use the 1.6% grade down the east slope towards Victorville and then Barstow, CA where it will then pick up the transcon towards Needles and beyond.

An eastbound stack train is giving all it's got as it runs the 3% uphill grade on the original 1885 alignment as another eastbound runs on the 1977 realignment of the 1913 grade in the distance. This is Cajon.

A stacker gently glides down the steady 3% grade on track 3 which encompasses most of the original mainline thru Cajon Pass passing over the remnants of Route 66 and under Interstate 15 while an eastbound works hard up the Pass at Alray.

Mormon Rocks is one of the prominent features of Cajon Pass in Southern California on a sub fault of the San Andreas. Here a westbound Union Pacific manifests sneak between the outcroppings and over Cajon Wash as an eastbound BNSF train struggles upgrade.
