brucekitto:
As we leave Sedona we find another interesting bridge over Oak Creek Canyon
brucekitto:
We reach Hoover Dam after a few hours
brucekitto:
They are building a new suspension bridge to move traffic (and keep the dam safe from terrorist attacks)
brucekitto:
Looking back up canyon towards Lake Mead - you can see how blue/green the water is
brucekitto:
Two of the intake towers are in Arizona
brucekitto:
And the other two are in Nevada - sometimes the time is different depending on daylight savings time
brucekitto:
It is clear that one of the main purposes of the dam is to create electricity!
brucekitto:
The new bridge is an amazing engineering feat!
brucekitto:
The dam was built 24 hours a day during the depression - finishing two years early
brucekitto:
Cars drive across the dam today - I don't expect they will when the bridge is done
brucekitto:
Family with the new bridge
brucekitto:
Looking the other way, the family with the dam in the background
brucekitto:
Hoover Dam - so big I had to stitch 3 pictures together
brucekitto:
At the base of the dam is the output from the electrical generators
brucekitto:
For such a "nature place" there is an amazing amount of engineering
brucekitto:
If you look over the edge you better not be afraid of heights
brucekitto:
The thermometer reached 115!
brucekitto:
Tricia and the boys at the Arizona/Nevada state line in the hot, hot sun
brucekitto:
It looks like the water level is really down - someone mentioned a 6 year drought
brucekitto:
Except for the bridge this could be 1935
brucekitto:
There are ropes to keep boats back from the dam for security
brucekitto:
At the bottom of the sign you can see the Arizona/Nevada state line
brucekitto:
Who would get up on the wall!?!
brucekitto:
When they built the dam, workers hung over the edge in a seat with no other ropes!
brucekitto:
Last view before we left of the new bridge
brucekitto:
When we got to Vegas we had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe
brucekitto:
Hard Rock Cafe - some of the Michael Jackson items had lots of people taking pictures
brucekitto:
There were lots of expensive cars driving around Vegas
brucekitto:
A little different look from the desert we've been seeing for weeks! More Vegas tomorrow.
