handsome monkey man... when we biked into town, we hung out here (across for some hottt-looking ruins) pondering if we can just park our bikes and jump the fence into the ancient site... the monkeys were hopping the fence!
anthonyp:
our tuk-tuk driver saved us lots of money by driving us through the 'back door' of these ancient sites...
anthonyp:
instead of us buying the official $35 tourist passes each to see the ruins, we paid this guy $30 to take us all around on the down-low. i think we made out alright
anthonyp:
this is the site of an ancient university for buddhist monks... if I'm correct, an estimated 6,000 monks inhabited this site at one time...
anthonyp:
my favorite ruin. at the very end of the hall stands a 50 foot buddha (headless, now)... but I can feel the greatness of this once amazing temple
anthonyp:
behind the giant buddha statue was this 5--foot high corridor, zooming with bats overhead
anthonyp:
giant wat. these huge domes are usually constructed atop a relic, with images of the buddha places around the dome (you can see 3 of them at the base)
anthonyp:
Lizard. i love it how i can look at many reptiles (their eyes mainly) and be reminded of Axl's loving gaze... even with this guy in Sri Lanka! I miss you Axl Rose!!
anthonyp:
Amy's feet upon an ancient threshold... back in the day women probably wouldn't have been allowed. Take that, Ancients! (So irreverent!)
anthonyp:
i believe, upon reading about Polonnaruwa after the fact, that this was in fact the oldest and most unique structure in the extensive grounds...
anthonyp:
Colosseum-like temple. there were Many layers and constructions spanning various dynasties and ages... so cool!
anthonyp:
The Lion is a recurring theme in everything Sri Lankan, yet no actual lions live on the island! Hmmmmm!
