SewLibra: I used a scrap to experiment using clear elastic. It was a failure because it did not gather enough and won't withstand a hot iron. I really pulled that elastic, too!

SewLibra: Hand wind elastic thread evenly with moderate tension, not too tight.

SewLibra: Increase your top tension. On my Bernina 1008, number 8 or 9 is perfect for gathering and shirring.

SewLibra: Using all purpose thread in the upper spool and elastic thread in the bobbin, sew normally within the seam allowance with a long stitch. I used 4.0 stitch length.

SewLibra: After sewing from notch to notch with elastic thread, the sleeves are uniformly gathered and curved.

SewLibra: Pin in your sleeve to the armsyce and it should go in much easier. Sew with regular thread in the top and bobbin, as usual. Remove the elastic afterward by clipping every couple of inches and pulling it out. Now serge off the seam allowance if you want!
