hamingredient: Sled bed is a sheet of 0.25" UHMW-PE, 15" wide x 10' long. Crossbar locations are marked with painter's tape and the middle line fastener locations are marked at this time.
hamingredient: Ash is the wood of choice for toboggans because... Tradition!
hamingredient: Crossbar "blanks" are cut to 5/4" x 3/4", and 15" long. The grooved pieces are for the front end of the toboggan at the top of the curl.
hamingredient: Test fitting Crossbar #1, which fits over the front edge of the toboggan at the top of the curl
hamingredient: A quick 'n dirty (dirty!!) router fence for rounding over the crossbar edges
hamingredient: Top edges of crossbars eased w/ a 3/8" roundover bit
hamingredient: Crossbar #1 for the top of the curl, edges rounded over
hamingredient: Crossbars are paired up; marking locations for running line grooves. It's convenient to be building two sleds at the same time, for this part
hamingredient: Grooves for the running lines are cut with a 5/8" Forstner bit in the paired crossbars
hamingredient: Crossbars paired, holes for running line grooves cut with 5/8" Forstner bit.
hamingredient: Running line groove holes eased w/ a 3/16" roundover bit in a palm router. This keeps the running lines from wearing or cutting on a sharp edge.
hamingredient: Smoothed the hole edges w/ 3/16" roundover bit
hamingredient: Tump straps were purchased from Black River Sleds (because I can't sew!)
hamingredient: Stainless steel hardware and 5mm climbing accessory cord for the running lines
hamingredient: Lashing kits are from Black River Sleds.
hamingredient: Toboggan duffel from Black River Sleds
hamingredient: Bed was cut with a track saw to a traditional "coffin" shape, tapered at front and tail. Credit and thanks to Lure of the North for their toboggan building guide and instructional videos!
hamingredient: First coat of tung oil... at 9*F
hamingredient: Tung oil doesn't cure well in the cold... I found a heated space to apply more coats.
hamingredient: Oiled and ready for assembly
hamingredient: Tung oil finish - I applied four coats
hamingredient: Tail piece has additional through-bolts to secure the brake line
hamingredient: Assembly time! Thanks again to Lure of the North for great instructions!
hamingredient: My buddy RS working on his sled
hamingredient: Front end grab handle.
hamingredient: Brass hardware on the lashing kit I got from Black River Sleds.
hamingredient: Finished! Time to load it up...
hamingredient: Canvas tarp first, to wrap the load. The stove is wrapped in a blanket at the back end.
hamingredient: Burrito-wrapped and lashed in place.
