raleighsheffield: And we are off to Salzburg, Austria, home of the Sound of Music, and oh yes, Mozart
raleighsheffield: Nice interior of Austria's high speed trains which they call "Rail Jets"
raleighsheffield: Better than a 737 any day!
raleighsheffield: View of Salzburg from my 11th floor room. Salzburg became a very rich city with the mining of salt in the region. Salz = Salt. And now you know
raleighsheffield: Lovely city, most expensive in Austria. Locals shop in Germany which is just a few miles from my hotel. Much cheaper
raleighsheffield: A good sign for my stay in Salzburg?
raleighsheffield: The hills are alive with the sound of ....tourists money
raleighsheffield: Main shopping street in old town. The vendors placed an icon of what they sold above their doors
raleighsheffield: Nearby is the birthplace of Mozart
raleighsheffield: Mozart statue in Mozart square
raleighsheffield: One of many quaint streets in old town
raleighsheffield: All this walking works up an appetite. This sausage delight is called a bosna. Delicious
raleighsheffield: View of old town from the new side, Salzach River
raleighsheffield: Fortress overlooking the city. Luckily it was never needed
raleighsheffield: Forgot name of this important Catholic Church, one of 43 Catholic churches in Salzburg. I think there are one or two Protestant churches
raleighsheffield: Took a bus tour in the afternoon to nearby Berchtesgaden, Germany where three is a national park in the Bavarian mountains. In this area is Eagles Nest, a retreat built in 1938 for exclusive use of the Nazi party. Hitler visited 14 times.
raleighsheffield: Got a drink from this unusual water fountain. Water flows out of a pig's mouth and through a pipe from which you can slurp the cool water. I have found there are very few water fountains in Europe. Maybe because they drink so much beer.
raleighsheffield: Early morning and I walk from the hotel to the old train station just across the street
raleighsheffield: Don't judge a book by its cover. This is the interior of the station
raleighsheffield: Where better to start a tour of beautiful Vienna than at the Cathedral of St. Stephens. Built from 1300 to 1460 the south spire rises 450 ft.
raleighsheffield: Interior of St. Stephens
raleighsheffield: More interior
raleighsheffield: Closeup of alter area
raleighsheffield: Vienna is just full of thousands of various styles of architecture. This is desecration of an attractive building
raleighsheffield: A little advance reading please
raleighsheffield: Vienna Opera House
raleighsheffield: Night shot of Opera House
raleighsheffield: We are now walking the Ring Road on which most of the significant buildings are located. This is just one of many; I liked the fountain with the building in the background
raleighsheffield: Another apartment house I liked. This kind of architecture abounds
raleighsheffield: Weltmuseum
