Lee Quarrier: Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. A big freighter got raised in the locks so it could move forward to Lake Superior. The destination of most 'upbound' ships (toward Lake Superior) seems to be Duluth, Minnesota.

Lee Quarrier: Soo Locks observation deck in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. There is a phone number that provides info on the upcoming ships, so people tend to start gathering a half hour before they arrive. An excellent visitor center is nearby.

Lee Quarrier: Before the Soo Locks were built, it would take three months to get a ship past the St Marys River rapids (21 foot drop from Lake Superior to Lake Huron). That involved all the townspeople pulling the ship on land.
