The Plaza Mayor as we know it today is the work of the architect Juan de Villanueva who was given the glorious, albeit difficult task of its reconstruction in 1790 after a series of enormous fires. Madrid 2003

The Plaza Mayor was built during the Habsburg period. This building: Casa de la Panadería, 1619, rebuilt in 1670. It has suffered several remodelings since then. Madrid 2003

Casa de la Panadería. Carlos Franco won the contest with a design based on mythological figures such as Cybele, Proserpine, Bacchus, and Cupid, as well as others invented by the artist, interwoven into the history of Madrid and the Plaza Mayor. 1992.
